Can octogenarians solve crimes? These four want to。 In this laugh out loud tale, a group of retirement home dwellers has the wonderful opportunity to solve a murder! What fun! I listened to the audio version of this book and it was delightful。 I highly recommend it。

This was a fun read! I look forward to the next one coming out。

I really enjoyed this book and I chuckled at the antics of the protagonists。 The final reveals had a nice enough twist to them and the changes in style throughout the book (narrator to journal and back) were well done。I'd like to know more about the two female protagonists, there was much hinting about their pasts but nothing definitive。 I kept feeling that there would be a revelation about Elizabeth's past especially, but none came。 I guess that's why there's a sequel。 I really enjoyed this book and I chuckled at the antics of the protagonists。 The final reveals had a nice enough twist to them and the changes in style throughout the book (narrator to journal and back) were well done。I'd like to know more about the two female protagonists, there was much hinting about their pasts but nothing definitive。 I kept feeling that there would be a revelation about Elizabeth's past especially, but none came。 I guess that's why there's a sequel。 。。。more

A thoroughly enjoyable read。。。。。。well drawn characters and a complex enough plot to keep the pages turning。 Whether it would have created such a fuss in the charts if the author wasn't a celebrity is questionable 。 However it was a very competent first novel 。。。funny, exciting and an interesting view on life in an upmarket retirement home 。 I would definitely recommend 。 A thoroughly enjoyable read。。。。。。well drawn characters and a complex enough plot to keep the pages turning。 Whether it would have created such a fuss in the charts if the author wasn't a celebrity is questionable 。 However it was a very competent first novel 。。。funny, exciting and an interesting view on life in an upmarket retirement home 。 I would definitely recommend 。 。。。more

Delightful! So much more than just an excellent whodunit。 Every character is well-designed, well-developed and perfectly integrated into a story that is sweet and sad and that, like all the best stories, you will wish to never end。

Because I haven't enjoyed a book this much in ages, told with humour and appreciation of aging。 The subject matter belies the humanity of the characters, who are presented with depth and pathos, retirees, police, and baddies alike。 What a delight。 Four residents of a British upscale retirement community gather every week to review cold cases, a pastime developed by a former police detective。 The death of the retirement home owner’s shady business associate brings the Thursday Murder Club in contact with a newly arrived police officer who wants to crack the case and is willing to bring the Club into the fold (little does she know…)。 It all sounds very cozy, and it is, even as the bodies start to pile up。 Author Richard Osman does a brilliant job of bringing the characters to life, including Elizabeth, with her Cold War past; Ron the blowhard union activist; Joyce, a former nurse whose diary entries provide a range of insight beyond the puzzle at hand; Donna, the police officer escaping a romance gone wrong in London; and Chris, in charge of solving the murder and managing the case better than his waistline。 The various plot strands, including a seemingly divergent 1970s death, come together neatly at the end, but the enjoyment is in the ride getting there。 The book can be laugh-out-loud funny but is also quite poignant as the retirees are all familiar with loss and death, and not everyone who dies in this book is killed。 The Thursday Murder Club is one of my favourite books so far this year, and bound to end up as a Christmas gift for more than one friend。 Love, love, love this book, and can’t wait for the next one。 Thank you, Richard Osman。 。。。more

This was such a fun read! Each twist and turn was unexpected and I couldn’t have guessed the ending if I tried。 I particularly enjoyed how Richard Osman wrote the voice of Joyce, and the switching between first and third person。 Such a charming book :)

I'm very unsure of the number of stars I want to give this book so I'll settle for 4, until I completely mull this over。 The book is so beautifully written and extremely easy to read。 I was addicted。。。 It didn't take too long to get through it。The storyline was great, I loved finding out who did it, but it felt like it came down too far away from the end。 It was a fantastic book but I just don't feel wowed by it。。。 I will read number 2 however。 😆 I'm very unsure of the number of stars I want to give this book so I'll settle for 4, until I completely mull this over。 The book is so beautifully written and extremely easy to read。 I was addicted。。。 It didn't take too long to get through it。The storyline was great, I loved finding out who did it, but it felt like it came down too far away from the end。 It was a fantastic book but I just don't feel wowed by it。。。 I will read number 2 however。 😆 。。。more

3。5 stars! A very enjoyable and overall just a good read。 There are lots twists and turns which make you constantly gripped。 I did like it but I have read better murder mystery books which I prefer。 It’s a good book but I can’t say that it’s anything better than just good。

In a retirement village, four friends meet weekly to discuss unsolved mysteries。 It is a real crime that gets the septuagenarians working on the case。 It is a wonderful mystery full of surprising twists and turns。

The characters were engaging and it definitely had potential but I felt the author lost his way a bit and had too many threads going on。 The plot became less gripping as the narrative rolled on and the ending was a bit unsatisfactory。 Pleasant read but not something to rave about sadly。

This is a book that feels like it has been crafted entirely for the prospective film or television rights — as a result, it comes across as poorly structured and/or something like an unedited manuscript (will actively not read books edited by Katy Loftus again)。 Looking back, I can see the denouement that the author envisaged, but the attempted plot development throughout is undermined by the poor scene setting and almost absent character development — it’s a challenge to care about or even be v This is a book that feels like it has been crafted entirely for the prospective film or television rights — as a result, it comes across as poorly structured and/or something like an unedited manuscript (will actively not read books edited by Katy Loftus again)。 Looking back, I can see the denouement that the author envisaged, but the attempted plot development throughout is undermined by the poor scene setting and almost absent character development — it’s a challenge to care about or even be vaguely interested in any of these characters or their plight。 Frankly, I don’t care who killed who; I barely remember who anyone is (given that the most insightful detail we get is that DI Chris fancies a pastry or two and has a paunch to match)。 The frequent head-hopping is jarring and the occasional chapters from Joyce’s perspective feels completely arbitrary。。。 it’s certainly a novel that must be consumed quickly to be able to make sense of what is going on。Ultimately, the premise is amusing enough — but the omniscient narration is highly discordant and detracts from the overall storyline。 I will begrudgingly bestow a few stars upon Osman’s work for the occasionally witty dialogue。 2/5 。。。more

There’s a lot to like about this book。 Firstly, some great characters, with diverse backgrounds and styles。 The author’s clearly trying to show that getting old, doesn’t mean you lose your grip on life。 This book is fun of intelligent, funny and fully-functioning pensioners who as a hobby to keep busy, investigate and solve murders。 The tone is light and humorous。 It’s as if Miss Marple suddenly turned up at the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel。 Particularly liked the small details of everyday British There’s a lot to like about this book。 Firstly, some great characters, with diverse backgrounds and styles。 The author’s clearly trying to show that getting old, doesn’t mean you lose your grip on life。 This book is fun of intelligent, funny and fully-functioning pensioners who as a hobby to keep busy, investigate and solve murders。 The tone is light and humorous。 It’s as if Miss Marple suddenly turned up at the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel。 Particularly liked the small details of everyday British life - Mini Cheddars and Sainsbury Taste the Difference - that create a great and fun sense of place and time。 The dialogue is snappy and believable, and the plot moves along at a fair old pace, so you’re never bored。If there’s one thing that lets it down, it’s the ending。 It ends up tying itself in knots trying to be clever。 There’s one or two too many false reveals or red herrings at the end, so that it stumbles slightly over the finishing line, rather than finishing at a flourish。 It doesn’t detract from what was otherwise a fun read though。 At the end he says a sequel is in development, which I’ll make a point to look out for。 。。。more

3。5 stars - I really enjoyed the camaraderie of the four main characters, but the storyline had too many unnecessary characters and attempts at plot twists。 I did laugh out loud a few times and was intrigued to find out ‘who dunnit’。

A fun read that’s hugely let down by the absurd plot twists towards the end。

Audio book。 Interesting at first but felt like the characters kept nattering onabout inconsequential things tbat added nothing to the story。 About 2/3 of the way through I jsut couldn't keep going。 I skpped to find out who did it。My favorite part was the authoer interview at the end。 He has finished his second book with many of the same characters。 Audio book。 Interesting at first but felt like the characters kept nattering onabout inconsequential things tbat added nothing to the story。 About 2/3 of the way through I jsut couldn't keep going。 I skpped to find out who did it。My favorite part was the authoer interview at the end。 He has finished his second book with many of the same characters。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book to start with but as it got more convoluted I struggled to follow it。 On finishing the book I didn’t have a clue what the ending was about。 I had to read the spoiler reviews to figure it all out。 If it hadn’t been for the fact I was reading a library copy that had to be returned it would have taken me a lot longer to finish it。

I don’t normally explain my rating but needed to for this read。 I felt the book was enjoyable and loved the quirky characters and the whole idea of a murder solving retirement home。 However, struggled to finish the book at my usual pace & felt it was quite the anticlimax, too many characters and all round very slow。

A group of old people in a retirement home has a old murder case solving club they like to spend some time with trying to figure out what happened。 But one day dead bodies turns up at their home so they do what anyone reasonably person would do and tries to solve it。 Even though it's a murder book, I found the characters to be very charming and compelling to read about and it was quite the fun time to try to pice the clues tougheter and I enjoyed the ending。 A real treat。 A group of old people in a retirement home has a old murder case solving club they like to spend some time with trying to figure out what happened。 But one day dead bodies turns up at their home so they do what anyone reasonably person would do and tries to solve it。 Even though it's a murder book, I found the characters to be very charming and compelling to read about and it was quite the fun time to try to pice the clues tougheter and I enjoyed the ending。 A real treat。 。。。more

I loved this from start to finish! There was one distracting, unnecessary subplot (hence, 4 stars instead of 5), but really, it was an absolutely delightful mystery。 I enjoyed it so much that literally, at only 50 pages in, I was looking up what other books the author has written。 I can't wait for the sequel this fall。 I loved this from start to finish!
